Escape to Capo Rizzuto
Isola di Capo Rizzuto is a province in Calabria in Italy that is a perfect destination for a summer getaway. Fascinating ruins dot the landscape that is accentuated by crystal clear seas. A must visit is the Marine Reserve. This area is a protected sanctuary for marine life. Throughout the reserve, there are hidden coves, beaches, and even fresh springs to be discovered. A variety of fish species can be found as a part of the marine reserve, called Zone A, is off limits to any activity. Thus marine life can thrive and in turn enjoyed by swimmers and divers outside of Zone A. In this area one can also explore the ruins of what used to be a Roman villa.
At the southern part of the reserve is the castle of Le Castella. In use since the Greek times, the castle received additional fortifications during the 16th century as the area was prone to attacks. Inside the castle, one can enjoy the views of the sea and surrounding coastlines.
Capo Rizzuto is actually built on top of human settlements that date back to ancient times. Thus, when driving around the area one will notice lots of ruins. There are also traces of former watchtowers lining the road along the coastline. These were built in response to pirate and Saracen attacks during those times.
Other places to visit in Capo Rizzuto are the Church of St. Marco and the Cathedral. In May, there is a huge religious festival that includes a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Greek Madonna.
